Memorials to William Edward Sanders

Sanders Avenue, Takapuna, Auckland, NZ.

This street runs down towards the sea, the Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto Island. A view William Sanders knew well. Sanders Avenue is also close to Takapuna School.

The ANZAC parade on 25 April each year, assembles at this memorial.

In Memoriam; This Street is named in memory of Lt. Cmdr W.E. Sanders V.C. D.S.O, who gave his life for the Empire in 1917

William Sanders attended Takapuna School. It was here the Admiral Jellicoe laid the memorial in 1918.

Also to our Dear Brother Lieutenant-Commander William Edward Sanders V.C. D.S.O. RNR - Master Mariner. Who was killed in action with an enemy ship off the coast of Ireland, August 14th 1917. Aged 34 years.

The Path to Honour is the Road to Glory.

The Sanders Memorial Cup - For The Australasian Championship in 14 foot One Design Boats. The first race was held in 1921.

 

The Cup is still raced today and for a site with the current information together with the history of the cup.

records State that his Official Memorial is as follows;

In Memory of Lieut-Commander WILLIAM EDWARD SANDERS DSO, VC, H.M.S. "Prize.", Royal Naval Reserve who died aged 34 on Tuesday, 14th August 1917. Lieut-Commander SANDERS was the son of Edward Helman Cooke Sanders and Emma Jane Sanders, of Russell, Bay of Islands, New Zealand. Held Extra Master's Certificate (Mercantile Marine). Born at Auckland, New Zealand. Remembered with honour PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon, United Kingdom

Memorial: PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon, United Kingdom Grave Reference/ Panel Number: 23. Location: The Memorial is situated centrally on The Hoe which overlooks directly towards Plymouth Sound. It is accessible at all times.
Auckland Town Hall

This brass memorial was rededicated at the Auckland Town Hall on 25 February 2000. The blessing was taken by the Principal Naval Chaplain Pauline Law.



The
memorial plaque that was first placed in the town hall in the 1920's. During a recent refurbishment it was removed and mislaid. A family member noticed that the plaque was missing and took steps to have it replaced. fortunately it was found, restored and returned to its rightful place.

A welcome was extended by Dr. Bruce Hucker, Deputy Mayor, Auckland City.

The address was by Commodore Peter McHaffie, Maritime Commander New Zealand.







The photo shows Dr. Bruce Hucker and Mrs Olwyn Welch. Mrs Welch was the Niece of William Sanders and sadly passed away in 2002. She was at the time the closest living relative.

There is a memorial over looking Milford Haven Harbour in the South of Wales. Also a memorial at a little Parish Church at Milford Haven.
Auckland University Scholarship;

Was open to the children of members of the Mercantile Marine and an Annual sum of 60 pounds per year was paid.

In 1998 the Scholarship's fund was augmented by Professor Graham Simpson, a former Sanders memorial Scholarship.
